As we approach the end of the year, no doubt preparations for the upcoming year are already underway. When youâre planning your year-long wellness initiative, itâs essential to create a program that balances both physical and mental well-being. A well-rounded program should be diverse, engaging, and cater to different fitness levels, interests, and seasons. It also strengthens your team dynamics and boosts overall workplace wellness.
Kickstart with Collaboration
The first quarter of the year is the perfect time to launch a program that sets the tone for collaboration and comradery and introduces a variety of activities to appeal to your team at large.
January: In It Together
Start the year strong with a collective challenge where everyone works towards a shared goalâwhether itâs steps, distance, or total duration. This encourages a sense of togetherness as everyone contributes to a larger target.

February: Multi-Sport-a-thon
Mix it up by encouraging participants to try out various activities, like walking, running, cycling, swimming, yoga, strength training, etc. The overall goal? To complete each type of activity at least once during the month. You can even set up sub-leaderboards to track progress for each type of activity.
March: Daily Streak
By this point, participants will have an idea of the kind of activities they enjoy. By setting a daily target, in steps or minutes, you can encourage participants to stay active consistently. Every day a participant logs an activity, they unlock a badge; and each consecutive 5-day streak unlocks a bonus badge!
Mental Wellness and Group Challenges
As spring arrives, focus on mindfulness and teamwork to enhance boost both mental and physical wellness.
April: Yoga and Meditation Month
Introduce a focus on mental well-being by encouraging participants to engage in one yoga and one meditation session per week for 4 weeks. Support their progress with articles and video content that highlight the benefits of mindfulness and stress reduction to foster a healthy work-life balance.

May: Go the Distance
Plan a group challenge where participants are divided into groups based on their preferred activityâbe it running, walking, cycling, or swimming. You can set a fixed distance or simply encourage participants to go as far as they can. To make the challenge fun, consider using a virtual map to track each teamâs progress (this works best for fixed distance challenges).
June: 2x2 Step Challenge
In teams of two, by random assignment or self-selection, challenge participants to a friendly step challenge. Set milestones for participants to reach over the course of the month to keep up the engagement as they work together to log as many steps as they can!
Mid-Year Reset
Summer is the ideal time to introduce lighter activities and focus on overall wellness, giving employees space to recharge before heading into busy fall.
July: Summer Break
Let your team take a breather with a lighter, optional set of challenges. You can encourage fun, low-pressure activities like walking, hiking, or swimming to keep participants engaged in the challenge while doing activities theyâd probably be doing anyway.
August: Nutrition Month
Shift the focus from movement to healthy eating by promoting nutrition throughout the month. Consider providing resources like quick-and-easy (but healthy!) meals or challenge participants to rethink a beloved recipe with in-season ingredients. Pair it with a non-competitive step challenge that has no leaderboardsâjust an encouragement to keep moving.
September: Step Challenge âSteptemberâ
Kick off Fall with a step challenge! Whether through solo walks, group outings, or creative step-counting activities, participants can set daily or weekly goals to stay active. To make it more engaging, consider a theme like âexplore your cityâ where participants log their steps while discovering local parks or landmarks.
Challenge, Competition, and Charity
As the year draws to a close, itâs time to reintroduce competition and wrap up the initiative on a charitable note.
October: Walking Challenge âWalktoberâ
Keep the momentum up and introduce a Walk-a-thon that shines a spotlight on walking, giving those who prefer this slower-paced activity a chance to lead. This creates a chill, social atmosphere for participants to take lunchtime walks together, for example.
November: Team Challenge
Divide participants into department or location teams and track their progress on both team and individual leaderboards. This adds a layer of fun competition while giving everyone a chance to contribute to their teamâs success, regardless of fitness level.
December: Giving Month
End the year with a charity challenge that combines fitness with corporate social responsibility. Set a collective fitness goal, and link higher participation levels to larger donations from the company to a charitable cause. This not only keeps employees engaged but aligns the fitness initiative with the companyâs values of giving back.
Bonus Challenges to Keep Things Fresh
Incorporate bonus challenges throughout the year to add variety and prevent burnout:
- Facility Discovery Challenge: Create a map that encourages employees to âvisitâ each of your companyâs locations through physical activity, unlocking videos or photos as they reach new milestones.
- Lunch Break Challenge: Encourage your team to move more during lunch breaks.
- Broken Triathlon: challenge employees to complete a 0.5 mile (750m) swim, 12.4 mile (20km) bike, and 3.1 mile (5km) run over the course of a month. Participants can spread these distances across multiple days, making the challenge accessible to different fitness levels while still encouraging variety and endurance.
